Comments on the Proposed Amendments to the Law on Media

Contribution of Metamorphosis, Meta.mk News Agency, Portalb, and Truthmeter to the Proposed Amendments to the Law on Media

In the direction of maintaining a constructive discussion and participation in the consultative process, while taking into account the experience and work of the Metamorphosis Foundation, Meta.mk News Agency, Portalb, and Truthmeter, proposals for amendments to the Proposed Law on Amendments and Additions to the Law on Media were submitted within the deadline via ENER. We are of the opinion that it is necessary to adopt a new Law on Media, which will comprehensively regulate all open issues in accordance with European norms and standards.

Furthermore, it is of utmost importance that the Amendments and Additions to the Law on Media are adopted through a maximally inclusive process, which involves the organization of a public hearing by the proposer, in order to specify other provisions that refer to the objectives outlined in the rationale of the Proposed Law, and are not regulated by the published Proposal for Amendments and Additions to the Law on Media. We consider that the proposed amendments lack provisions to address the issues cited as the reason for the amendments and additions to the Law on Media, which refer to “combating disinformation, hate speech, and the violation of professional journalistic standards present in online media outlets and platforms on social networks.”

The submitted proposals are following:
