Participation in advocacy training against domestic violence

Correctly informing the public about the nature of domestic violence and
the actual situation of women who have suffered domestic violence, as well as
legal protection mechanisms, contributes to increasing public support and
encouraging women to report violence and seek help and support.

In the period 2-3rd of October, was held a Training for ethical, professional and legal reporting on domestic violence in h. Glorious – Veles, where journalists and representatives of civil associations, including representatives of our association, acquired knowledge and skills, as well as guidelines for writing influential media content to improve the general public’s understanding of domestic violence.

The opening speech of the event was given by the deputy ambassador of France, Mr. Philippe Marcheteau, who emphasized the achievements so far in this field and the importance of this type of initiatives to increase the prevention of domestic violence.

The training was conducted within the framework of the project: “Discover, engage, encourage: advocacy against domestic violence”, financially supported by the French Embassy in the Republic of North Macedonia, and it is implemented by the Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality ESE from Skopje, in cooperation with Mother Association from Kumanovo, LET Station from Prilep and Women’s Forum from Tetovo.

The main goals of the project are to improve journalists’ understanding of the nature of domestic violence, the legal framework for the protection of women who have suffered domestic violence, as well as the way of media reporting on cases or issues related to domestic violence, support to civil society organizations (CSOs ) in the creation of adaptable, accurate and concise information on the topic of domestic violence, with the aim of making this information more accessible to the media and facilitating networking and improving cooperation between NGOs and journalists for more effective handling of domestic violence as a social problem.

As a result of the activities carried out, local journalists and CSOs under the mentorship of an experienced journalist in each of the municipalities will work on the preparation of two co-authored texts regarding domestic violence, the aim of which is to contribute to the creation of long-term partnerships between the media and CSOs in the fight against misinformation related to domestic violence. Media stories (texts) will be prepared taking into account the importance of ethical media reporting and compliance with reporting standards for cases or topics related to domestic violence.
