Open call for participants: Media literacy workshop “Fake News, Algorithms and Polarization”

Project Dates: 28-30 September

Project Place: MultiКулти

Deadline for Applying: 20 September

About the project:

From Awareness to Action is a project implemented by the Macedonian Civic Education Center (MCEC), in partnership with the Center for Intercultural Dialogue (CID) and LOJA, with support from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF). The project aims to strengthen community resilience and prevent violent extremism by empowering young people and local communities, promoting critical thinking and media literacy, and strengthening cooperation between local institutions, schools, civil society, and other community actors.

About the media literacy workshop:

This three-day programme aims to strengthen community resilience and help prevent violent extremism by preparing young people to navigate digital media critically and responsibly. It focuses on building critical thinking and media literacy skills, while contributing to broader efforts to strengthen cooperation between local institutions, schools, civil society organisations, and other community actors.

During the program, we will explore questions such as:

Why do we see certain content on our feeds and who decides what appears there?
How can we tell whether information online is reliable?
What can we do when we encounter misleading or harmful content online?

And, more broadly:

How does the digital world shape the way we think, feel, and understand the world around us?

The learning will also be put into practice. During the training, participants will work together to design a youth initiative based on the topics explored, which will be implemented following the programme with support from the project.

Who can participate?

This training is designed for young people aged 18–30 from Kumanovo, Lipkovo, and Staro Nagorichane who want to better understand how the digital world influences them and develop the skills to recognise and protect themselves from misinformation, manipulation, and harmful online content.

What will you learn?

  • Tools for recognizing disinformation and manipulation techniques

  • How algorithms and artificial intelligence shape the content you see and the information you receive online

  • Techniques for building personal resilience to digital pressure

  • Strategies for developing youth initiatives with opportunities for practical application

What can you expect?

  • Analysis of real examples from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube

  • Group work, simulations, and role-playing activities

  • Exploring real examples of disinformation, deepfakes, and other forms of online manipulation

  • Practical exercises that challenge the way you think about and interact with online content
