Green knowledge for a strong local community in Ropotovo

Over the period of May-October this year, six educational workshops were successfully held in the village of Ropotovo, aimed at strengthening local knowledge and practices related to sustainable development, environmental protection, and energy efficiency. Through these activities, around 70 local residents from different age groups were involved, demonstrating strong community interest and the need for locally based educational initiatives.

The workshops were organized into three thematic areas, with two workshops dedicated to each topic:

The first cycle focused on organic waste separation and composting. Participants learned what constitutes organic waste, the benefits of proper separation, and how composting can transform waste into a valuable resource for gardens and agricultural land. Special emphasis was placed on building upon existing rural practices while integrating them into organized, collective waste management systems. As part of these activities, organic waste collection stations were installed at two locations in the village, and participants received small household containers for collecting food waste.

The second cycle addressed energy efficiency in households. Local residents received practical advice on reducing energy consumption, using electrical appliances more efficiently, and improving overall household energy performance—contributing both to cost savings and to environmental protection.

The third thematic area was dedicated to renewable energy sources, with a focus on the use of solar and wind energy in rural settings. Participants were introduced to the benefits of green energy solutions and their importance for long-term, sustainable local development.

All workshops were implemented as part of the activities of the Green Resource Hub established in the village of Ropotovo, which aims to serve as a central platform for education, information, and knowledge exchange on sustainable agriculture, energy-efficient practices, and the use of renewable energy. Through these activities, Ropotovo is increasingly positioning itself as an engaged and informed local community moving toward a more sustainable future.

*The activities are part of the project Smart Green Village for Sustainable Future, which is implemented with the support of the Open Society Foundations Western Balkans.
