Caravan Via Egnatia Wins 2025 European Innovative Teaching Award

We are pleased to announce that the educational board game Caravan Via Egnatia, developed within the Via Egnatia Project, has been awarded the 2025 European Innovative Teaching Award (EITA) in the category of Secondary Education.

The European Innovative Teaching Award is an initiative of the European Commission, established in the 2020 Communication on achieving the European Education Area by 2025. Its objectives are to:

  • celebrate the achievements of teachers and schools and give credit to their work,
  • identify and promote outstanding teaching and learning practices,
  • provide means for mutual learning, and
  • highlight the value of the Erasmus+ programme for collaboration between teachers at the European level.

Caravan Via Egnatia was recognized for its creative approach to education, allowing students to experience the challenges and excitement of 19th-century travel along the ancient Via Egnatia route. By combining history with interactive play, the game strengthens skills in teamwork, cooperation, decision-making, and cultural understanding.

Although the award carries no financial prize, it brings significant recognition and visibility across Europe, affirming the project’s role in promoting education through play and cross-border collaboration. The official announcement of the 2025 EITA winners was made by the European Commission on 15 September 2025.

The “Via Egnatia – A Wonderful Way to Play” project was implemented between 2022 and 2024, supported by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, and implemented by the Via Egnatia Foundation in cooperation with the Macedonian Civic Education Center.
