700 Kilograms of Waste Removed from the Sateska River: Natyra Calls for a Long-Term Solution

Today, the Union of Ecologists “Natyra”, together with its members and volunteers from Struga, carried out a cleanup action at Sateska River, where it flows into Lake Ohrid.

In just a few hours, we collected approximately 700 kilograms of plastic waste and other litter. This is not just a number—it is clear evidence of the severe pollution that the Sateska River continues to carry into Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s most valuable natural treasures.

This problem cannot be solved through cleanup actions alone. It requires concrete and sustainable measures. For this reason, the Union of Ecologists “Natyra” will intensify its efforts to secure support from local and international organizations, local authorities, and state institutions to bring back into focus the long-term solution: restoring the Sateska River to its original riverbed, the most effective way to protect Lake Ohrid.

This will be one of our key priorities in the period ahead.

Our commitment does not end here. Our next cleanup actions will take place in the areas of illegal dumpsites located above the springs within the watershed that supplies drinking water to Struga and the surrounding communities, because protecting water sources means protecting both public health and life itself.

We would like to thank all the volunteers and citizens who took part in this action. Only together can we protect nature.

Special thanks also go to JP Komunalno Struga (Public Utility Company Struga) for supporting this initiative by transporting and properly disposing of the collected waste.

🌿 Nature has no voice—we must be its voice!
