Do it yourself for your child (manual to prepare didactic materials from waste materials)
BACKGROUND
Specialized didactic materials for working with children with disabilities, because of their specific nature are very rate on the market of the Republic of North Macedonia; even those that are present on the market are very expensive. Taking into consideration the necessity to work with a child with disabilities at home as well, as a follow-up of the work of the special educators in the schools and centres, we think that enabling the parents themselves to prepare teaching materials for their children in accordance with their needs, interests and abilities from waste materials (plastic, cardboard, paper, bottles, caps, etc.) will enable continuous progress of every child. The teaching materials will be for development and stimulation of the visual and auditive perception, eye-hand coordination, development of the gross and fine motor skills, pre-exercises for reading and writing, adoption of numbers and numerical quantity, adoption of space relations, forms, colours, seriation, classification of one or more external features, self-help skills and cultural and hygienic habits, etc.
GOALS AND RESULTS
Goal:
Continuous progress of the people with disabilities by creating work conditions at home to enable the parents to prepare teaching materials from waste materials at home.
Objectives:
- Developing the feeling about the needs of their children with the parents, so that they actively follow their work, but also participate in it;
- Increasing the self-confidence, motivation, interest in achieving higher results with the children with disabilities; wish for their own development, bigger trust in the parents;
- Promoting the rights of the children with disabilities.
RESULTS
- The preparation of the Manual will make the access to teaching materials easier, both for the people with special needs and the other people;
- The Manual will enable easier access to ideas for preparation of teaching materials from waste materials. The parents and other CSOs, as well as public and private institutions will be encouraged in an alternative way to provide teaching aids and materials;
- Civic participation: By also presenting practical projects from the Manual, the parents, kindergartens, primary schools and other centres for development of children and youth with and without disabilities, there will be exchange of experience and preparation of quality teaching materials from waste materials that will at the same time provide public awareness raising on the proper usage of waste materials for higher purpose.
ACTIVITIES
- Setting up a project and professional team;
- Workshops with the families of people with disabilities;
- Preparation of the Manual with photos, recommendations and advice for preparation of teaching aids for the children with disabilities at home from waste materials in the home;
- Promotion of the activities and the Manual via electronic media.
