CONSTITUENTS

The ecological association “Zdravec 2002” was established in 2002 as an ecological association for environmental protection at the territory of the municipality of Makedonska Kamenica, where the main polluter is Sasa mine, which is located at the foot of Osogovo Mountains.

The ecological association “Zdravec 2002” is active at the territory of the municipality of Makedonska Kamenica, and it stands for environment protection, building a proper relation of man to his environment and natural surroundings, education and public awareness raising.

In order to protect and improve the situation of all stakeholders of quality life, the ecological society cooperates with citizens and CSOs at local, regional, national and international level.

ON THE PROJECT SUPPORTED BY CIVICA MOBILITAS

Monitoring of the Kamenichka River.

BACKGROUND

Conducing control of the release of heavy metals and other additives into the Kamenichka River by Sasa mine. On 14.09.2020 година there was an environmental disaster when 3.000 m3 ran from the tailing pond no. 4 into the Kamenichka River where it flows into Kalimanci Lake. The very flow of dross destroyed the flora and fauna which had gradually recovered from the previous damage on 09.01.2019, when a pipe bringing the dross to the tailing pond 3 broke and all dross which comes from flotation ran into the waters of the Kamenichka River. The first ecological disaster was on 30.08.2008 when 700,000 m3 of dross ran into the waters of the Kamenichka River at Kalimanci Lake which has not been cleaned until nowadays.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Goal: Monitoring of the Kamenichka River and researching the presence of heavy metals and other additives in the water to the allowed limits according to MKD.

Objectives: Harmful influence of the heavy metals and other additives from the release of dross into the river basin of the Kamenichka River, which has a harmful impact on the animals and plants, and especially on the people livign by the river.

RESULTS

  1. Cleaned Kamenichka River in 12 months from the conducing of the monitoring from heavy metals and other additives and returning of the Kamenichka River into normal to the allowed limits of pollution according to MKD.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Meeting with the municipality and Sasa mine and informing them that “Zdravec 2002” CSO will conduct monitoring of the Kamenichka River within 12 months until the Kamenichka River is back into its original state.
  2. Meeting CSOs, sport associations and citizens of the municipality of Makedonska Kamenica and informing them about conducting monitoring activities on the Kamenichka River.
  3. Opening a Green Phone line where the citizens can inform ED Zdravec 2002 at any time on pollution of the waters of the Kamenichka River.
  4. Establishing Eco patrols to control the Kamenichka River from pollution and photographing on the spot.
  5. 12 months of taking samples from the waters of the Kamenichka River.
  6. The samples will be taken into an accredited laboratory for presence of heavy metals and other additives in the water according to MKD table.
  7. Keeping documentation on the obtained results from the accredited laboratory.
  8. Publishing the results of the measurements on the web page of the ecological association.
  9. Closing conference and presentation of the measurement results of heavy metals and other additives.
  10. Printing a brochure with the results of the conducted measurements from the monitoring of the Kamenichka River.
  11. Submitting a request by ED Zdravec 2002 to the municipal council of Makedonska Kamenica to adopt continuation of the monitoring of the Kamenichka River after the end of the project.
