“Women Journalists for Stronger Civil Society”

Background for the Action

Women journalists, although making the biggest part of the workforce in the media are still at the secondary and marginalized level in the management structures. The latest analysis of SSNM showed that the media are primarily owned and managed by men. Women journalists do not have the position in the media that they deserve – to run, manage, decide on important issues on media contents equally. This situation definitely leads to a generally low sensitiveness in the media contents when it comes to topics related to gender issues, marginalized groups, human rights, etc. The topics that CSOs work on are often fully marginalized and they are not present in the popular (mainstream) media. In the media, there are less and less young journalists who are appropriately educated and trained to face the challenges of contemporary journalism in the 21st century. The comparison of the figures at the journalism faculties shows decreasing trends of five, six times less enrolled students compared to 10 years ago. In the media, there are almost no multimedia contents, mobile journalism, usage of modern and contemporary digital tools, research, serious analyses, and practice of digital trends that are used in other countries.

Goal: Encouraging active civic engagement in the civic initiatives by promoting professional journalism and improving the situation of women journalists in Macedonia.

Objective: Stimulating interest with the media and public on topics that are marginalized in the media, while being significant for the civil society by strengthening the capacities of 20 young female journalists and journalism students in the area of multimedia and mobile journalism.
