Fireproof Protected Building – Safe Municipality

BACKGROUND

In the last decades there have been many fires that could have been prevented much faster if the citizens had been informed, and the institutions in charge had undertaken all measures for fast extinguishing of the fires, especially if the residents had fire extinguishers, functioning firefighting installation in their buildings and if they had been educated how to act in order to prevent, evacuate and extinguish the fire. Our activity will encourage the resident councils, citizens, municipalities, high school students, the City and the Directorate for Safety and Protection to undertake specific measures to record, prevent and have the system functional to react fast when there is an initial fire and to provide safe evacuation.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Goal:

Firefighting protection in residential buildings, checking and repairs of firefighting systems for fire extinguishing, informing and educating the citizens to act in cases of initial fire, educating the high school students on the meaning of firefighting protection, survey with the high school students on the situation with their fire extinguishing installation, encouraging the mayors and the municipalities to motivate the local units of the Directorate for Safety and Rescue to record all buildings and put the systems in function with an appropriate training of the resident councils, and the firefighting brigade should conduct a training of the high school students.

Objectives:

  • Functional firefighting protection saves the human life and property of the citizens, but it also helps in environment protection;
  • Informed and educated citizens who know how to act consciously, and as such they also encourage the municipal and city governments to improve the conditions together with an action and undertaken specific measures for timely prevention;
  • Education of the young generations and their joining from their youngest age with their older neighbours about the safety of their residence will create persons and a community that would be responsible for their closest environment in the future.

RESULTS

  1. Informed citizens about the need for smooth functioning of the firefighting systems, education and way of evacuation in cases of fire;
  2. The mayors and the local units of the Directorate for Rescue and Protection will undertake specific measures to record and encourage the resident councils and the residents to educate themselves and put the systems for fire protection in function;
  3. Educating the young generations by establishing a firefighting unit and the importance of firefighting protection, practical exercises, education;
  4. Survey and research by high school students on the condition of the firefighting systems in their residential buildings and if they are functional. This survey would provide information on the condition of more than 150 facilities and it will stimulate the young people to talk about the firefighting protection with their peers, teachers, neighbours and families;
  5. Presentation to the representatives of the resident councils on how they can organize themselves and how an old building that has set the firefighting protection systems in put in function.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Information to the media on the start of the activity;
  2. Meeting with the mayors and the local unit for safety and rescue to start and coordinate the activities with the local communities and resident councils to check all higher buildings, record and inform the residents on the need to have smooth functionality of the existing systems;
  3. Training and establishment of a firefighting unit in 2 high schools where the firefighters will use exercises and education to show the usage of tools and all other means for prevention and safe extinguishing of fires, as well as ways of helping and evacuating high school students;
  4. The high school students in 2 high schools will conduct a research on the condition of their apartment buildings and how the fire protection is organized. This survey will provide relevant data on the condition of some hundred homes, and it is most important that the young people will discuss with their family members and neighbours on how to protect themselves in case of fire;
  5. An exercise in front of a number of resident council representatives on the ways of evacuation, fire extinguishing and checking the functionality of the fire extinguishers and hydrants and other ways of protection and putting into function of the existing ones with the firefighters from the firefighting brigade.
