LET US PRESERVE THE PEARL OHRID LAKE

BACKGROUND

The research conducted by UNESCO experts in the last two missions to the region of the Ohrid Lake (in 2017 and 2020) revealed that there had been deterioration of the management of this eco system, seriously endangering the extraordinary universal values that had made this region part of the world heritage. This is a result of a series of factors, but also of the insufficient level of communication and lack of culture of cooperation between the authorities and the civil society. Because of this, the recommendation of the 44^th UNESCO session (Fuzhou, July 2021) was to include it on the list of endangered world heritage, because at the moment, the Ohrid Lake region is facing serious threats. The demand of the IUCN and ICOMOS to include the Ohrid Lake region on the List of Endangered World Heritage (Fuzhou, July 2021) was rejected, but it was approved to give Macedonia and Albania a chance to change within a period of 2 years. The goal of this initiative is to increase the sensitivity and participation of all stakeholders from the region in each decision making via full and complete information and via communication, as well to get acquainted in detail with the obligations and rights that they have on the status of the region, because the current practice shows that this culture of cooperation is lacking.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Goal:

The goal of the project is to increase the capacity of the local government structures, regional offices, CSOs and all stakeholder by creating a communication strategy among the parties that deal with protection and management of the Ohrid Lake region as UNESCO world heritage.

Objectives:

• Creating three training packages that aim to provide comprehensive information of the UNESCO World Heritage Programme, the values of the Ohrid Lake and its region, as well as the potential threats for endangering of these values;
• Preparing a report on the ecosystem problems and preparing a roadmap for the process of its management in the future;
• In cooperation with all stakeholders from the region, preparing a communication strategy for all stakeholders in the region in order to create a new culture of lasting cooperation as a condition that guarantees the preservation of the status of the Ohrid Lake region as world heritage.

RESULTS

1. Awareness raising with all stakeholders in the region via their specific and professional training, on the obligations that they have to the regional world heritage status;
2. Creating a new climate of cooperation among the bodies in charge of management and protection of the Ohrid Lake region as world heritage and the stakeholders in the region by preparing and approving of a Communication Strategy;
3. Creating and publishing a series of informative and sensitizing materials not only for the local and regional stakeholders, but also for the ministries in charge of preservation and management with the Ohrid Lake as world heritage.

ACTIVITIES

1. Preparing a training programme for three stakeholder groups
2. Identification of the problems related with the management of the region as world heritage and recommend a roadmap for the future
3. Organizing three round tables with stakeholders in the region and preparing a Communication Strategy for the community
