Sustainable network for food saving

BACKGROUND

The consequences of the food shortage and the existence of insufficient nutrition are present with 21% of the population of North Macedonia, so more than 60,000 children and young people do not have all meals per day. This is considered a significant obstacle in their development, especially their integration in the educational process, because the insufficient nutrition decreases the capacities of the children and youth to successfully attend classes, influencing their concentration and cognitive process.

According to the data of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy at the territory of our country has 50 soup kitchens where there are more than 4,000 people. For this purpose, the Ministry allocates around 100 million denars from the budget of RM, but because of the limited resources, more than 90% of the people who need support, defined as vulnerable categories in the Law on Social Protection are not covered with this assistance.

The existence of soup kitchens and the implementation of other programmes, while increasing the social wellbeing, still do not efficiently use the means of the broader community. Apart from meeting this social need, one also looks into the management of the big waste of perfectly good food coming from food processing industries. At least 12,000 tons of surplus food is thrown out in North Macedonia every year, which is 30 million meals that could have fed tho9usands and thousands of hungry citizens in the country.
