Background for the Action
According to the annual data of the reports of the Communal Hygiene enterprise, there is more than 161,388 t/m3 communal waste collected from the households and the public space from all municipalities within the City of Skopje (source: City of Skopje). Still, the visual image of the city and every individual municipality does not show cleanness. Public space is covered with waste thrown on all sides, and it seems that the citizens are not aware of the care and improvement of the environment. Out of all communal waste that is being collected from all municipalities within the City of Skopje, 14% is waste that is generated in the most densely populated municipality – Chair, where, according to the data of the City of Skopje and the State Statistical Office, there are 64,823 inhabitants. According to the estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO), the environmental burden of diseases in our country is 3,370 deaths which are ascribed to the environmental risks or 166 at 100,000 citizens. There is evidence that the impact of the dirty environment has harmful effects on the health, first of all with children (Strategic Frameworks for Improvement of the Health and Environment in RNM by 2020).
GOALS AND RESULTS
Goal: Raising the awareness of the clean environment with the youngest population by building a value system for creating future eco-aware generations.
Objective: Educating preschool children from the municipality of Chair on a clean environment.
Results
- Children are acquainted with the concept of a clean environment;
- Children recognize that the waste is thrown at appropriately marked spots;
- Children encourage their parents to become involved in the process of further building their awareness for the clean environment;
- The program managed in contributing to developing an interest in care and awareness with the youngest population, via an interactive approach and entertaining way of communication;
- The cooperation among the kindergartens, municipality, media and business sector is stimulated in order to jointly take care of the common living and working space.
Activities
- Preparing 3 illustrated children’s books;
- Production of an environmental video;
- Developing a mobile application (game) for encouraging and raising the awareness and care for the environment;
- Visiting all kindergartens in the municipality of Chair, presenting the picture books and explaining the importance of the care for the environment, informing them about the mobile application that they can play together with their parents;
- Final event and joint eco-aware action.
